Internet Safety
Internet safety is an important topic that all children, pre teens, teens, and adults should know about. The internet can become a very dangerous environment very easily; just clicking on one pop up or responding to one email can put you at risk.

General Information about the Internet for ALL Ages

  • All ages under 5
Ø Cyberbullying is not very common for children ages five and under, but it still has the same impact it would have on a children ages six through twelve. However, five year olds still need to be aware that the computer can be a dangerous place; just clicking on one pop up could put any child in an unsafe environment. Parents should take caution when their child is on the internet and make certain restrictions when he or she is using it.
  • Ages six through 12
Ø Cyberbullying for children ages six through twelve, may not be as intense as older children’s, but it still can hurt the victim being bullied and cause the person to feel emotional pain. Other than cyberbullying, children ages six through twelve have to be aware of the dangers of using the internet. Some twelve year olds, maybe even kids under twelve, have Facebooks. Facebook is a great way to socialize on the internet, but it is also could become a scary place to kids who don’t know what they should or shouldn’t put on their profile. Putting information, like your address and phone number, could easily put you at risk. You have to remember that anyone can see anything you put online.
  • · Teens
Cyberbullying is probably most common with teens. You hear many stories about teens and the effects cyberbullying has had on them; many have commited suicide or have long term emotional pain. However, cyberbullying CAN BE STOPPED! If you ever see anyone being cyberbullied, or hear from a cyberbullier about a new potential victim, you NEED to SPEAK UP and STAND UP FOR WHAT’S RIGHT! Cyberbullying creates a lot of chaos on the internet, but there are actually more issues that teens need to understand. Facebook is probably one the most popular internet websites used by teens. Since Facebook is a major part of a teen’s life, they need to be aware of the possible consequences:
  • Adults in their 20’s
    • Since adults are more mature than teens and younger children, cyberbullying doesn’t affect them. However, they still need to be aware of other dangers of the internet. Most twenty year olds have Facebooks. In order to keep their facebook accounts safe, they should change their passwords regularly. Also, even though they are considered adults, they should still be cautious of what they put on the internet. Even though they are older, they can still be in danger if someone gets their information. Also, they need to make sure to never give their credit card numbers out unless they KNOW the site is SAFE. Twenty year olds are more likely to get their identity stolen, because they don’t normally check their credit card accounts.

  • · Adults in their 50’s
All adults by now usually have credit cards. This means that many adults are at risk of getting their identity stolen. At fifty years old, getting your identity stolen is very common, which means they should extra careful when they are on the internet. It is very easy for someone to get your credit card number if you are not aware of the consequences of putting information on the internet. Many people shop online, so many people give their credit card information through technology. You have to make sure you know the site is safe BEFORE you give any information that could put yourself in danger.

  • Adults in their 70’s
    • As I was saying for adults in their 50s, adults in their 70s have to be aware of the same things. They need to make sure that they keep track of their credit card accounts. Also, some older adults have facebooks as a way to connect with family members that they don’t usually see. If that is the case, then they should understand to change their passwords every so often and be aware of what they put on the internet. Many jobs require the use of computers. Adults should remember not to put any information out about their companies.

Phishing is when the person sends you an email or text message trying to get you to give out your information, like your passwords and credit card account numbers.
Example: There is something wrong with your account. Please give us your credit card number, and we will try to fix the problem as soon as possible.

Identity Theft
Identity theft is when your identity is stolen after someone steals your credit card number and other personal information.

Instant Messaging
Instant messaging is a great way to communicate with others, but it also can lead you into a very dangerous environment. Instant messaging someone you don’t know is very dangerous; you NEVER want to respond to a instant message if you don’t know the person.

Chat Rooms
Chat rooms are a way to communicate with people through the internet and are very common places for kids and teenagers to visit. However, they are also top sites for pedophiles, adults that are sexually attracted to younger children.

Scams are false emails or messages asking you for money or your information. Scams include emails asking for money for a local charity, a hurricane hit state, or someone who is dying. Scams can seem real, but don’t be fooled into giving your information out.

Facebook is a great way to connect with your family and friends. It has helped many family members keep in touch. Also, it has helped students, entering a new school, meet new friends, while keeping in tough with their old ones. However, you need to be aware that not everything on Facebook is safe. There are many people out there who will try to find out all your information. Just remember: Keep only necessary information, have privacy settings, and change your password every so often!

Sexual Predators

The internet has created a great way for kids to connect, but with that there are also very dangerous people interested in corrupting the safe environment intended for kids. Sexual Predators are people, usually older adults, who communicate with young children in a way that is totally inappropriate. They ruin the minds of younger kids, and open them to a new environment very far from safe.

Emails are a way to communicate through technology. Many jobs use emails to communicate with other co-workers. However, you shouldn’t ever keep the same password; you should change your password every so often. You don’t want anyone to get your password and be able to get into your email. Also, you should never respond to an email from someone you don’t know, many emails could be spam.

Passwords are very important to have for your Facebook, emails, and other communication sites. You should change your password maybe every month so that no one can hack into your email, Facebook, etc. Make sure you DO NOT give out your passwords to anyone. KEEP YOUR PASSWORD PRIVATE!

Bank Account Info
You bank account information is very important to keep safe. Many people accidentally give out their information to people who end up stealing their identity. Some give their information to emails that ask for money and others do online shopping with a store they don’t know. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THAT THE ONLINE STORE YOUR SHOPPING ON IS SAFE! Basically, be sure to keep your bank account information to yourself and be very responsible with it.


Harassment onthe internet is when attack you through technology. Some cruel people intend on destroying the innocent minds of children by continuing to send inappropriate emails or texts to kids. Also, some children cyberbully other kids through the internet by calling them names or them feel excluded from everyone.

Cyberbullying is when someone purposely is mean to someone else through technology. Cyberbullying is NEVER the right thing to do! Many cyberbulliers bullying other kids because they feel insecure, they want to fit in, or something else is going on in their life and they need to take it out on someone. However, if you ever see or hear someone is being cyberbullied, IMMEDIATELY tell an adult. No one should ever feel bad about themselves and be attacked like that through the internet.

Sexting is when someone sends a picture of themselves nude to another person. Sexting is never acceptable and is against the law. When you sext, you are disrespecting yourself and the other person. Sexting causes way too much drama, and gives you an awful reputation.
