3. Dangers of Internet/ How to Prevent Them
- Phishing: is a form of identity theft or a scam. For example if someone who you do not know sends you an email to “verify your credit card number” they are trying to get you personal information, so do not send them your credit card number. To prevent this, right when you receive that email and you do not see a sender, delete it right away. If the sender is actually from you bank or is not a scam meet with them face to face, whatever you do on the internet people can hack and get that even it is sent to the right person.
- Identity Theft: if you are not careful about what you put online, people can hack your personal documents and steal you credit card numbers, bank account information, family information, and steal your identity.
- Instant Messaging -
from people you don't know: instant messaging is an easy way for strangers to talk to you. It’s very dangerous to go on instant messaging because people who you don’t know are chatting you and they can learn about your personal life. To prevent this DO NOT go on or download any instant messaging websites or apps.
- Chat Rooms: chat rooms are were you chat/ video chat with a stranger and talk to them. This is not good because they can take pictures of you and get into your accounts by what you tell them like personal information. To prevent chat rooms and video chats do not go on the website, never accept or respond to any chat you get online.
- Scams: scamming is the most common internet danger, because when you get a pop up and it says “take this survey and get a free ipod!!” then you take the survey and don’t get anything in return and they download a virus into your software. To prevent this do not go on websites or click on links that would show pop ups or download viruses, or close the pop ups immediately.

- Social Networks:social networking like facebook, myspace, and chat rooms are the most common social networking sites. These sites are good for talking to friends: however do not put your personal information out because everyone who views your profile can see them. Also do not accept friends who you do not know or barely know, because you never know who they actually are or will give your information to.
- Sexual Predators: sexual predators are everywhere, even if they don’t seem like one you never know who they actually are. They can talk to you online or say hi t o you in a store. The sexual predators online usually talk to you through chat rooms, they lie about they age and say they are the same age as you or maybe 1 or 2 years older, they could be 15 years older and you will never know. Sxual predators try to get personal information out of you, like were do you live, how old are you, or what school do you go to. To prevent this you can report them on http://www.fbi.gov/scams-safety/registry if they are currently talking to you or just stay away from those websites.
- Email: email is another way people can get information out of you. People who you don’t know send you scam messages or trying to steal your identity. To prevent this get a software that helps block these emails or scams http://www.zixcorp.com/secure-email.
- Passwords: passwords are for you and you only. If you give passwords to someone else they can hack anything of yours. So keep your passwords safe and to yourself.
- Bank Account Info: your bank account info is for you only. Your passwords CAN NOT be repeated to anyone. People can hack into your account and take money from you. So keep any password that you have especially your bank account password to yourself.
-Harassment: If someone harasses you on the internet tell someone immediately. If they send nudes to your email and keep sending them please contact http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/investigate/vc_majorthefts/cac.
- Cyberbullying: cyberbullying is very common among tweens, if someone is cyberbullying you DO NOT respond because it can start so much more
problems. If this is happening to you tell your parents.
